Traditional plastic lined coffee cups cannot be recycled in Australia because they cannot separate the paper and plastic materials effectively. However, our cups are made of a single material, so they can be recycled in the paper stream.
To recycle them, rinse the cup, tear it into 2 or 3 paper pieces, and dispose of it in your yellow bin. It’s important to do this because recycling centers only accept clean and uncontaminated materials, and they reject items that resemble cups, as many people mistakenly think all cups are recyclable.
Not an option
Home is where the best recycling happens as most of Australians have access to a three bins system or do their own compost.
If you live near a community garden or use the Share Waste app for community composting, your neighbors may accept our certified home compostable cups in their compost. These cups will contribute valuable carbon to their compost piles.
It’s important to note that landfill is not a suitable option for composting because nothing properly decomposes in landfills, and it generates methane. If landfill is the only disposal option for your cup and lid, it will break down faster than plastic or bioplastic lined cups. However, it will not transform into nutrient-rich compost that could have been used to grow herbs and veggies.
